Desert Vista Snaps Hamilton 53-Game Win Streak

Aside from capturing the Division I champ Saturday, Desert Vista also grabbed the distinction of ending Hamilton's record 53-game win streak.

Most were surprised that Desert Vista was able to pull-off the 45-19 championship win, because the Thunder lost to Hamilton 35-10 during the regular season.

Desert Vista was led by quarterback Hunter Rodriguez, who completed 13-of-23 passes for 177 yards.

The championship is the first for Desert Vista since 1998.

It's been a rough year for win streaks around America, but Hamilton's is still going strong, although it was in danger last night.

Hamilton came from behind to beat Chandler 28-21 to extend its streak to 46 straight.  Phoebus in Virginia owns the nation's longest active streak at 49 straight.

Chaparral Loses to Bishop Gorman in Sollenberger Classic

Bishop Gorman (Nevada) started the season in a big way Saturday night with a solid 42-22 win over Chaparral in a battle of nationally-ranked teams at the Sollenberger Classic at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Gaels were led by Shaq Powell who scored six touchdowns while rushing for 303 yards on 28 carries. Powell also catch three passes for 34 yards.

Bishop Gorman entered the game ranked #10 in MaxPreps.com's Preseason Top 25 Poll, while Chaparral was ranked #24.

Prescott High Names Steve Moran New Football Coach

Prescott didn't have to look far to fill the sudden vacancy for a head football coach.

Steve Moran, who was helping former head coach Bob Young as an assistant, has been promoted to head coach.  The hiring closes, at least for now, the coaching carousel that began when Young accepted the Prescott job, then resigned a month later to return to his old job at Mingus.

Moran has plenty of head coaching experience, having led the Bradshaw Mountain program in the 80s and 90s.  In 19 years as a head coach Moran owns a record of 142-67-1.

The Bob Young coaching carousel between Mingus and Prescott High Schools has returned to where it started.

Young, who resigned from Mingus earlier this year to take-over the Prescott program, has decided to return to his former job at his former school.  Young replaces Neil Dixon, Young's long-time assistant, who was named head coach after Young left for Prescott.

Young was named Mingus head coach in 1997, but left for two years while he coached at Westwood.  Mingus won the 4A state title in Young's first year in '97.

With practice beginning August 1st, Prescott is expected to name an assistant as interim coach for the 2011 season.

Phoenix Lands All-American High School Football Game

And then there were three...three high school football All-American all-star football games that is.

The United State Marine Corps and Junior Rank, a national training company for young athletes, announced today the creation of the Semper Fidelis All American Bowl that will be played January 3, 2012 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The East-West format game will showcase 100 of the best seniors in the nation.

"The United States Marine Corps is the embodiment of honor, tradition and working with your teammate to achieve an objective," said Junior Rank founder Shaon Berry. "Nothing will stop a Marine from his objective. The parallels between a winner on and off the field, those same core values, will be manifest in the participants of the bowl game and combine which bears the name of the United States Marine Corps. We look forward to bringing in the best athletes from across the nation to a beautiful setting in Phoenix for a true celebration of the game."

The Semper Fidelis All American Bowl will be held in conjunction with Fiesta Bowl Week and the celebration surrounding the BCS bowl game in Arizona.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is the oldest of the post-season national all-star games. Recently Under Armour joined the field with the help of a television contract with ESPN.

With spring high school football practice getting ready to kick-off in select states around the nation within the month, I thought I'd spend some time talking about football on Sunday's NHSCA Sports Hour.

Steve Belles, head coach of the powerful Hamilton Huskies, will join us as the lead guest on the show. Hamilton is the three-time defending Class 5A Division I champs with a 40-game win streak.

One of the main topics on the show will be a game in 2012.  That's right, I'm talking about two years from now. That's when the Huskies will play California-power Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the first-ever American high school football game in Ireland.

Don't worry, we'll also spend plenty of time talking about what's ahead for the program in 2011.

Hamilton to Play in Ireland in 2012

The long rumored...at least since December...American high school football game in Ireland appears now to be a reality.

Texas-based Global Football is putting together a series of games in 2012 will include Arizona-power Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) taking-on Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, California on August 31, 2012 in Dublin, Ireland.

Reports indicated that four more high school games could be added to the weekend, which will conclude with the Army-Notre Dame college football game at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Hamilton has won three straight state championships, while Notre Dame has been one of the top programs in California for years.
